The rules

Objective: Be the first to score 121 points by creating combinations of cards

Deck: Standard 52-card deck

Gameplay:

  1. Deal: Each player is dealt 6 cards (4 if there are 3 or 4 players). Players then discard 2 cards into the "crib," which is an extra hand for the dealer.
  2. Cut & Starter: The deck is cut, and the bottom card of the upper section (the "starter") is revealed. If it's a Jack, the dealer scores 2 points ("two for his heels").
  3. The Play: Players alternate playing cards, aiming to create combinations that score points, while keeping the running total under or equal to 31. Points are scored for pairs, runs, and hitting 15 or 31.
  4. The Show: After the play, hands are revealed and scored for combinations, including pairs, runs, flushes, and nobs (having the Jack of the same suit as the starter card).

Scoring: Points are scored for card combinations during the play and the show, as well as for the crib (dealer's advantage). Common scoring combinations include:

  • Pair: 2 points
  • Three of a kind: 6 points
  • Four of a kind: 12 points
  • Run of three or more cards: 1 point per card
  • 15: Any combination of cards adding up to 15 scores 2 points
  • Flush: 4 cards of the same suit in hand (not counting the starter) score 4 points; 5 points if the starter is also the same suit.

Winning: The first player to reach or pass 121 points wins the game!
